Gujarat/ Rajasthan are known for its
bandhej work, popularly known as tie and dye. The cloth is first folded in
halves, quarters and then pressed over a block on which the design has been
worked out in raised nails or pins, which push up the material in required
places. The fabric then goes to the dyer and is immersed in the lightest of the
shades to be used. The knots are then united and the fabric pressed on to
another pattern block tied in like manner and dyed again in the lightest of the
remaining colours to be used. After the final dyeing when the cloth is spread
out, dotted patterns in various colours are found all over the field.
